Slotting and shaping questions

What is a slotting machine used for?

Cutting internal keyways, splines, square and hexagonal holes, and internal grooves — work a lathe or milling machine cannot reach inside a bore. Any workshop making pulleys, gears, sprockets or couplings needs one, because the keyway is what stops the part spinning on the shaft.

Bench type or heavy type?

Bench slotters up to 300 mm stroke handle keyways in pulleys, sprockets and small couplings, and sit on a bench in a corner. Heavy slotters from 8 to 20 inch stroke take work up to 48 inch diameter and 24 inch high, and need a foundation. Work from the largest component you cut, not the average.

Shaper or milling machine?

A shaper cuts flat surfaces, slots, grooves and angles with a single point tool that costs a fraction of a milling cutter. It is slower, but tooling is cheap and easily reground in the shop, which is why shapers remain in Indian tool rooms long after the West retired them.

What size shaper do I need?

Ram stroke sets the longest cut you can take in one pass. A PS12 takes 300 mm, a PS42 takes 1000 mm. Match it to the longest surface you machine and check the table size takes the work.

Can you build a different size?

Yes. Both ranges are built to order in non-standard strokes and table sizes. Send the largest job you machine and we will confirm the configuration.
