12 Feet Lathe Machine

PAL1220 · belt drive cone pulley lathe · manufactured in Batala since 1950

Long shafts, rollers, pipe and column work. A 36 inch swing takes most general heavy turning, and at 2,500 kg the machine has the mass to hold a cut without chatter on long components. Bed width is chosen separately from bed length, so the same 12 foot machine can be built light or heavy depending on the work.

Other sizes

Compare bed lengths and prices

The standard range runs from 4.5 feet to 30 feet in nine bed lengths. Prices below are starting figures ex-works.

What it will take

Jobs the 12 foot machine is bought for

Long shafts and columns to 2,800 mm

Line shafts, screw conveyors, hydraulic cylinder rods, mill columns and long spindles.

Components to 900 mm diameter

A 36 inch swing. Large gear blanks, rope drums, crane wheels, turbine casings and pipe flanges.

Heavy roughing without chatter

At 2,500 kg the machine has the mass to take a deep cut on a long unsupported component, which is where lighter machines fail.

Steel and sugar mill maintenance

A common size in mill maintenance departments where components are both long and heavy.

Choosing

Is this the right size?

Bed length is only half the decision

Our 12 foot machine is built on bed widths from 18 to 32 inches. That is a very wide span, and it changes the machine completely. An 18 inch bed at 12 feet is a long, relatively light machine for slender shaft work. A 32 inch bed at the same length is a genuinely heavy machine for large diameter components — different weight, different centre height, different price.

So when you enquire, tell us both numbers: the longest component and the largest diameter. Quoting on bed length alone is how buyers end up with a machine that is long enough but not stiff enough.

12 feet or 16 feet?

Go to 16 feet when you need centre height above 18 inches, or when components regularly exceed 2,800 mm between centres. The 16 foot range starts at 3,800 kg and moves up to 6,000 kg, which is a different class of foundation and a different class of handling equipment at your end. Do not buy it unless the work needs it.

Before it arrives

Floor space, foundation and power

Space and foundation

Allow about 4.5 m × 2 m for the machine, 1.1 m behind and 2.6 m at the tailstock end. Working footprint around 7.5 m × 3.5 m. At 2,500 kg a 300 mm reinforced concrete foundation with grouted bolts is recommended, and the machine must be levelled properly on installation — a 12 foot bed will show up a poor foundation. Detailed foundation drawing supplied.

Electrical supply

3 to 5 HP depending on bed width, 3-phase 415 V. Allow a 10 to 15 HP supply for the wider beds with coolant.

Transport and unloading

Around 2,500 kg. Moves as a single unit; you will need a hydra or crane to unload. 4 to 6 days to most of India, longer to the North East and the far south.
