Sawing machine questions

Band saw or power hacksaw?
A power hacksaw is cheaper to buy and cheaper to run, and blades cost a fraction of a band. It is slower and leaves a rougher face, but for a shop cutting stock to length it is hard to beat on cost. A band saw cuts faster, squarer and with far less waste, which pays back where you cut all day or where the cut face goes straight to machining.
What is kerf and why does it matter?
Kerf is the width of material the blade turns into swarf. A hacksaw blade is thick and wastes more on every cut. On expensive alloy or on high volume, that waste adds up faster than most workshops expect.
Bi-metal or carbon blade?
Bi-metal M42 blades cost more and last several times longer, especially on stainless and alloy steel. Carbon blades suit mild steel and occasional use. On a machine running daily, bi-metal is cheaper per cut.
Which size do I need?
Work from the largest round bar you cut. Hacksaws run 200 to 600 mm round, band saws 200 to 400 mm. Remember square capacity is always lower than round, so check both if you cut billet.
Pivot type or double column?
Pivot machines swing the head down through the cut and cost less, which suits general workshop use. Double column machines guide the head on both sides for a squarer cut on large sections, and are the choice for production.
